Shabbat Message from Rabbi Yossi
How do we turn a mediocre relationship into a great one?

Speaking with a young couple this week, I was fascinated with one of the comments that were made. Complementing her husband's ability to communicate, the young wife described how her husband notices everything she does, from the washing of a few dishes to the clothing that she wears. She turns to me and asks: Do you think he is a little obsessive?

At first I thought 'Wow, what a great guy! How long have you been married?' But I answered her by saying how lucky she was to have a man who invests his energies and attention to all of the small things in their marriage. To me, these actions show how he cares and absolutely adores her. A great relationship is where even even the most mundane and routine acts are imbued with feelings of specialty and appreciation.

We see this message from this week's Parshah. The question is asked as to how the Torah could go straight from the dramatic and awesome reading of the Ten Commandments (last week's Parshah) to talking about the simple and ordinary commandments, the 'Mishpatim'.

However, it seems that G-d is teaching us a lesson in how to build our relationship with Him. We must fulfil the most logical and mundane commandments with the same affection and reverence as the Ten Commandments themselves. We should not weigh up the importance of various Mitzvot but treat every Mitzvah that comes our way as special and deserving of our attention.

Communicating one's feelings on an anniversary or a special occasion is indeed good and must be encouraged. But better is to communicate one's feelings and appreciate the many 'small' things that each one does for the other.

With blessings for a great Shabbat,

Rabbi Yossi and Chana Raizel Friedman
