The Central Synagogue welcomes you to Sydney, Australia! As well as the many beautiful services and facilities you can find at the Synagogue, the vibrant Sydney Jewish community also has much to offer.

Shabbat Hospitality for Visitors

For interstate or overseas visitors seeking a meal on Shabbat, please contact Lara on 9389 5622 to organise a meal in advance.

We are always looking for families who are willing to host individuals for the occasional Friday night dinner or a Shabbat lunch. From time to time we have visitors from overseas or out of town who are in Sydney and do not have friends or family with whom to have a Shabbat meal. If you are interested in being a host, please call Lara at the Shul We would be most appreciative of your hospitality.

Sydney Eruv

On Shabbat, Jews are forbidden to carry any item; however, the Religious Court of King Solomon sought to distinguish between a truly public domain where all carrying is prohibited, and a more localized domain, bounded by an eruv where some carrying is permitted.

The Central Synagogue fall within the Sydney eruv as do most areas in the Eastern suburbs of Sydney.

For more information about the Sydney eruv, visit www.sydneyeruv.org.au.

To check whether the eruv is functional, call the community Eruv Infoline each Friday after 2:00pm (02) 9990 4982

Mikvah

A mikvah is a pool designed specifically for immersion, according to the rules and customs of Jewish law. It contains about 900 litres of water. Immersion in the mikvah is one of the most important biblical commandments and is an integral part of maintaining family purity. Both men and women are commanded to use the mikvah at various times.
